Tokara, an exeptional vineyard in the Stellenbosch Mountains

Jan 17, 2019 | Business, Fine Wine

In 1994 GT Ferreira purchased the Tokara farm for residential purposes. But that was until the wine-making potential of this land was discovered. The cool air makes for great wine and soon classic varietals were planted along the slopes of the Helshoogte Pass.

From the estate, you’ll be able to catch a glimpse of Idas Valley, False Bay and the Simonsberg Mountains. Three different farms in Stellenbosch, Elgin and Hemel-and-Arde valley supply the Tokara winery. The Highlands vineyard in Elgin is surrounded by Fynbos and near the coast. Due to it being cooler in Elgin, the Highlands Sauvignon Blanc ripens six weeks later than the Tokara Stellenbosch Sauvignon Blanc vineyards.

The Tokara Premium Wine Range includes Whites such as the Reserve Collection Walker Bay Chardonnay, Reserve Collection Noble Late Harvest, Walker Bay Sauvignon Blanc, White (Semillon), Elgin Sauvignon Blanc and Stellenbosch Chardonnay. The Red is called Red (A Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot blend).

Their Zondernaam wine range includes Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Rose and Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon Blanc. Tokara produces Potstill Brandy from Chenin grapes of nearby wineries. Aside from wine, they also produce cold pressed extra virgin olive oil. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the art works displayed in tasting centre.

Did you know?…

  1. On the estate there is an outstanding Fine Dining Restaurant, a Tasting Room surrounded by great works of art, and at the Deli you will find Sculptures. At Tokara they want to remind you that making great wine is an art and their philosophy is that good wine, good food and good art go together.
  2. TOKARA’s wines are distinctive and sophisticated. They will age well and should gain in character when set down for a few years. Contributing to this quality is the estate’s dedication to cutting edge technologies.
  3. Tokara is a one of South Africa’s best fine dining restaurants: the kitchen is run by award winning Chef Richard Carstens and Tokara offers a concise menu with selected meals which change seasonally
  4. On the walls in the private tasting room is a wonder to behold: Tokara has sponsored an initiative at a local art school in Stellenbosch over the last 7 years encouraging creative experimentation with the wines of Tokara. All the paintings have been made using the wine of Tokara.
