Haut Brion and Succession (Netflix)

May 6, 2023 | Fine Wine

Just watched #succesion4 Ep2

As a big fan of the show I love to see how they use #finewine for brilliant subtextual storytelling.

In this Episode Connor is drinking Château Haut Brion, one of the 4 original Bordeaux first Growths.

Like Château Haut Brion, Connor stands apart from his siblings in 4 ways:

1. He is the oldest
Château Haut Brion – 1521
Château Margaux – 1582
Château Lafite Rothschild – 1707
Château Latour – 1718

2. He is an outsider, always excluded from everything

-> Château Haut Brion is the only first Growth that is not in the Médoc. It is in Graves

3. Connor has a different personalisty.
He is softer than his siblings.

-> Château Haut Brion is mostly merlot, a grape with normally softer Tannins, whereas the other first growths are mostly Cabernet Sauvignon.

4. Connor physically stands out, being noticeably taller

-> Château Haut Brion has a recognizable bottle that stands out against the traditional Bordeaux bottles of the other first growths.
