Château Pieuré – Lichine

Château Prieure Lichine was, at first, the home of Benedictine monks that were used to produce Bordeaux wine for dinner and various religious ceremonies.

In 1789 parts of Prieure Lichine were bought by numerous surrounding Chateaux in the Margaux appellation. Since that time, the vineyard has sold wine under several different names including La Prieure and Prieure-Cantenac.

In 1951, the noted author and wine merchant Alexis Lichine bought the estate when its vineyard had only 11 planted hectares. After he purchased the property, he decided to keep the first name to honor the history and add his last name as he was the new owner. Thanks to Alexis Lichine, Château Prieuré-Lichine got back on truck with an addition of 58 hectares of vines. These additional vines were purchased a little bit everywhere and are spread throughout the Margaux appellation in a great diversity of terroirs and soil types with varying levels of quality.

Nowadays, the property is in the hands of Ballande Group, a successful negotiant in Bordeaux. Chateau Prieure Lichine finished a complete renovation and modernization of their cellars and winemaking facilities

Did you know?…

  • Rumors are, the estate was bought for the ridiculous sum of only 8,000 British Pounds!
  • Alexis placed a large, showy sign in the D2, the Route de Medoc, to attract tourists. The sign on this main road was informing that Château Prieure Lichine was open for tasting, visits and sell wine. People in Bordeaux didn’t like it that much as it was very rare to have tourists.
  • Today, the second wine of Prieure Lichine is sold under two names, Confidences de Prieure and Le Cloitre du Chateau Prieure Lichine.
